Stop Shaking Your Leg!

I finally identified The Man Who Shakes His Leg Like There's No Tomorrow. I would not have realised if I haven't talked today about leg shaking men with a friend, when he walked past.

2 semesters ago when I took the exam for DSC 2006 in HSS Auditorium, I was unpleasantly disturbed by The Man Who Shakes His Leg Like There's No Tomorrow. With one leg propped against another, he shakes his leg so violently that the whole row of connected seats started shaking simultaneously. Unfortunately, I was the one who sat next to him, receiving the full force of his inconsiderate actions. He shook his leg till his slipper came off. He shook his leg till his pencil dropped to the ground. I was extremely frustrated. I almost threw my pencil case at him. I could have complained to the invigilator but I kept my cool. At the end of the exam, I tried to glare at him to express my anoyance but to no avail.

The next day was the exam for FNA 2004. I should have expected it since the seats arranged according to alphabetical order, and that FNA 2004 was a compulsory module everyone had to take, including The Man Who Shakes His Leg Like There's No Tomorrow. Lo and behold, he was assigned to sit in front of me. The ritual started again. He shook his leg till his slipper came off. He shook his leg till his pencil dropped to the ground. I was extremely frustrated. I almost threw my pencil case at him. This time, I tried to hiss at him while trying to concentrate on my paper. Again, I did not complain to the invigilator.

My last paper was FNA 2002, also a compulsory module. No prizes for guessing it. I got a little help this time. A guy next to him was irritated too. He asked the invigilator to get him to stop shaking his leg. HAHA. That only stopped him for a while though. Argh. I hate him.

Anyway, he's now in my Consumer Behaviour class. I finally understand why I took a dislike to him when I first saw him in the class. Subconsciously, I remembered that he is The Man Who Shakes His Leg Like There's No Tomorrow.

Leg shaking makes you look either like a hooligan or a
DOM. Stop it!

//Edit (6 Oct 09): It has been brought to my attention that there are many responses to this post. To the readers who feel that I am an insensitive bitch for whining about somebody's unfortunate medical condition, this post was written 4 years ago when I was still a self absorbed chick who did not realise that leg shaking could be a form of compulsive disorder. Only when I observe my blog tracker over the past few years and see that many people stumbled onto this page while searching for treatments on such a condition that I realised this may be a serious issue which some people are facing. For my ignorance, I apologise. My objective of writing in my blog really is to entertain (and at times brag about myself) the readers and I feel that this post is one of my proudest piece of writing for the blog. I hope the readers will take my ramblings with a pinch of salt and not get too emotional over it. By the way, I secretly believe that the guy mentioned in the post was not in need of medical help. He just lacked a form of self control at the expense of others.//

well unfortunatley its not something that is consciously done. I tend to do it myself. I don't really notice, it just happens. I'm sure the man wasn't thinking..hmmm i think i'm going to shake my leg and annoy the hell out of people. Cut him some slack !

i on the other hand think like you.. when i was young i used to shake my leg.. my mom told me not to.. but that didn't stop me.. until i noticed how annoying it was to sit beside a "leg shaker" it's extremely annoying to sit beside one.. and to be considerate of others.. i have a friend that shakes his leg when we eat.. i hate it because when he shakes.. my whole body trembles and it's very uncomfortable..
i also know a girl who does it and it's NAAAAAAAAAASTY...

I shake my leg, although I don't realise that I am actually doing it. Someone told me that it is because I am reliving the day when I 'shook me boody on the dance floor' but I seem to think thats an old fishermans story.I have since purchased heavy sandbags and fastened them to my right leg. The effects have been fascinating....

I shake my leg too when I'm nervous or bored or have been sitting a long time, and usually I don't know I'm doing it. At times it's just an irresistable urge to shake. People who shake their legs might also have Restless Leg Syndrome, which is a real disorder where your legs feel crampy and hurt if you don't move them. Shaking them "works it out."

I feel bad for people that I annoy when I do this, but it's as hard for me to stop as it would be for someone who compulsively bites their nails. -Becky

I am sorry but i shake my leg everyday all the time. i have actually shook my desk apart at work and had to screw it back together. I dont know what causes it but i have seen several others with the sdame problem. Maybe its all the pot people smoke. Maybe not. But i am sure we can all live without it. WE NEED A CURE

Anonymous said...

does anyone know what causes it? it is something other than restless leg syndrome because i do it only during the day. i know its genetically inherited because my whole family does it. let me know if you find out what its called. ps: move as far away from the guy as you can....because as many times as you tell them they will not stop! (it's not on purpose so don't think its just a little leg show for you)

I CANNOT stand it when people shake their legs during class, especially when I'm trying to take a test. I just don't understand how people don't know that they're shaking their legs violently, so much to the point that the friction from their shaking leg and the ground make an awful and consisent squeaking noise. It is seriously annoying. People who "do not know that they are shaking their legs" deserve to be isolated in a room with other leg shakers just so that people who think like I do can actually concentrate for once! One time, this girl sat next to me during my AP test. I definitely could not focus on the test but rather her crazy leg with a "mind of its own" for almost three whole hourse. Seriously, is this whole leg shaking thing a joke? It's like barfing every five minutes or flailing your arms randomly and not realizing that you are doing it. It doesn't make any sense at all.

apparently leg shaking is a subconscious sign that the person has unresolved sexual tension issues or generally they are hungry for sex.

Anonymous said...

Don't bother saying anything about it. One of three things will happen if you do. Either they wiill get offended, cause a scene, and keep doing it: they will get offended, say nothing, and keep doing it: or they will apologize, and keep doing it. You see, it's a nervous habit, and they can't help it, which makes it your problem. As a normal person, you're supposed to just put up with it, and act like it doesn't bother you, because otherwise you're being rude and intolerant.

I had a similar experience, except in my case, I sat next to a guy (assigned seating) who was either shaking his leg, or biting his nails. Always one or the other... and he had incredibly bad breath, and slurped as he bit his nails.

I started taking ritalin and it went away.

That drug is some weird shit.

why be mad at someone who shakes their legs? I shake my leg like no tomorrow and I can't help it. I have ADHD and it's a problem that is uncureable without ritalin substances.

I work at a desk and shake my legs all day long. Its really difficult to stop and however I place my legs I have to resist the urge to shake. I really think it is the result of laziness. Shaking your leg causes a vibration that I think eases pressures that would otherwise be passed to other areas of the body, in my case the mind. The vibration puts me in a state of ease, but I know it that it childish and never really developed out of it.. :(

Involuntary leg shaking while inactive is one of the signs of early Parkinson's Disease. Perhaps you should write an email to Micheal J. Fox and ask him to stop shaking his leg as well.

That would be a different form of leg shaking... I think leg shaking is a healthy form of stress relief and those that dont understand it fail to see the benefits and are jealous they cant shake like the best. {%>

I shake my legs often. I don't notice that I shake my legs most of the time, but I have noticed that when when I take tests or am nervous and need a place to channel my energy and feel more comfortable I shake my leg, so I just apologize in advance to people sitting next to me before an exam. I try not to shake my legs, but usually I end up doing it.

I used to shake my legs & bite my nails but I tried to be conscious about controlling it when it could disturb people around me. However just before turning 32, I found out I had nonhyperactive ADD since childhood for which I started Strattera. Basically I like other ADDers had developed many coping mechanisms such as leg shaking (they call it fidgeting) that helped me focus and concentrate especially in class. I also experienced lots of anxiety (since natural adrenaline/norepinephrine works in the same way as stimulant meds for ADD-adderall & ritalin) resulting in compulsive perfectionism. Other symptoms was being easily excitable, sometimes impulsive, emotional thinking, or out-of-the-box thinking to make all subjects interesting enough to concentrate on (so mixing science with God/religion/philosophy). My friends would say I was just different if not weird. I stopped nail-biting recently after getting regular manicures since fidgeting caused me to notice anything that wasn't smooth on my fingers for which I would bite in order to smooth out (bit OCD). Also I used to think I was lazy or tired all the time. None of these things are medical conditions so doctors ignored them as issues. They sometimes have no clue what they are doing. RLS is leg shaking during night while sleeping. There is no disease name for normal leg shaking in classes. Good luck to all those who can relate - I feel for you. Sorry to all others.

I'm SAD, a little OCD and a little ADHD. When you have both OCD tendencies and ADHD, you'd think that's a strange combination. But basically, the drugs that treat OCD aggrivate the ADHD and vice versa. To stop the shaking of my leg, I drink 1/4 cup of Diet Coke first thing at work. It makes my neighbors happier, though I start counting stuff in my head. Good luck.

Yea it didn't make sense to me either to be obsessive (Luvox worked for me for a short while) and nonhyperactive attention deficit (ritalin did not help it) at the same time either. But I feel like I'm either on or off - obsessively attentive or sleepy & not being able to focus on accomplishing something with an out-of-control tendency to procrastinate. And also the medical doctors said my hearing was fine but I found out that I couldn't hear in social settings b/c I had central auditory processing disorder the whole time. Strattera helped will both the ADD & central auditory processing disorder & now my anxiety level is down to normal like everyone else in the world. I was told that my symptoms resembled PTSD (hypervigilence & trying too hard) before starting Strattera.

my left leg for whatever reason shakes uncontrollably at times, even right now i am consciously sitting here shaking my leg. I've never been able to understand why its just my left leg. My dad suggests to me that it is a choleric disorder referred to as St. Vitus' Dance. When I looked this particular disorder up, it did not seem to fit to the shakyness of my legs, Choleric disorders although are often tied to genetics, they are also connected to anemic deficincies of the body. It might just be a habit of stress, when one works, standing and lifting for 8 hours, it might just be how the body works out the muslce stresses. Then again if that were the case for me then I would have figured both of my legs would shake.
I may never know the cause.
Another detail about i have noticed is both legs do it when lifting weights with my leg, whether its half or equal to my body weight, the legs shake violently.
I would love to know the cause, but I'm sure I'll be fine either way.

Shaking your leg is public masturbation. It gives you an erection. Literally every kid in every school masturbates 24/7 using this.

Anonymous said...

You ought to be ashamed of yourself for being so judgmental and intolerant. If you don't know the reason why someone shakes their leg, then don't assume that it's something they CAN stop. Many people aren't even aware that their legs are shaking, and did it ever occur to you that maybe some people have MEDICAL reasons for doing it? By the way, telling people to stop shaking their legs usually only results in them shaking their legs even more!

Anonymous said...

Yeah, the thing is it can be many reasons, some believe its to relief stress and relax and some think its just a habit and they do not notice they are doing it (which they dont notice at all). I do this alot anf i dont notice. i looked it up eventually and its actually because of certain medical illness which people have said. I cant remember the exact name but people who do it normally have trouble communicating and are probably a quiet person. Its the same for really dyslectic people. However there is a rumor as they said that its because of sexual tension but really that seems like its more of a rumor to embarrass people that are doing it. Don't be so harsh on them they cant help it :(

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!! I can't believe I stumbled upon someone that felt the same way I do about leg shakers!!!!!!!! It is so obnoxious that leg shakers don't at least TRY to stop shaking. It's like any other bad habit--JUST MAKE THE INITIATIVE TO STOP!! When I was a kid, I used to shake my legs a lot and I realized it would shake the entire couch + coffee table. So I started watching TV with one of those Christmas bell ornaments on my lap. It trained me to stop shaking my legs whenever the bells shook. DUH LEG SHAKERS!! AT LEAST TRY TO RELIEVE EVERYONE ELSE FROM THIS NUISANCE!!!

I just dont know how others feel, but I feel thoughful to myself.

-most of the times I do it when I need to collect new thoughts. [90% of the times]

But I did it some other times also
but it is very interesting to see how really it effects some other people.

I want to share some thing when I did that(by not knowing) and what happend to others...

1)I'm watching a live tennise match(final) of two young women playing., my player is winning and I'm exciting about it..and it is very intersting..and deeply involved myself in it...(at this point I started shaking my leg.. and watching ball by ball having fun since my favourite star is winning. stadium is 30% full..I sat alone no one is there next to me both sides for about 5 seats.
At this point one young girl(may be age between 19-22) while walking "suddenly" she sat beside
me just by looking my shaking leg.
(I thought there is something with shaking leg and a girl's mind.,)

2)One more incident, one day I went to a liabrary and there were some newspapers/magazines on the table I pulled one chair and sat started looking at it casually, while I'm reading a good looking young girl(medical student who is reading/writing medicine books)came back from a break and sat just right side of me (I'm on the center/boss chair). I quickly turned my head and looked at her face and her body, said to myself "she is stunning" and again started looking magazine and said to myself "I should not look at her again". After 10min. she started moving her body curves
slightly, I saw it without turning my head. I dont know exactly what happend to her but it seems "she wanted my head should turns towards her(I guess)"
she pressed her body to the table
twice, for my eyes it gave me unbelievable great feeling.,YES!! exactly within few seconds my leg "started shaking" itself. Here is the interesting point., now my leg is shaking, her body is on the table(curve able to see)
because of my leg shake there is a little shake to the table, and she attached her body to the table and her curve also shaking(very very little but she can feel the shake as a vibration)
exactly at this point, she took off her body(curves) from the table, UNBELIEVABLE!!! MY LEG SHAKING STOPPED ITSELF, and again in a second she kept her body(curves)on the table "UNBELIEVABLY!!! MY LEG STARTED SHAKING ITSELF AGAIN" she did that quickly twice the same thing, and the same thing happend twice with my leg.

I did not turned my head to her, but SHE TOOK CONTROL OF MY LEG, AND AS IF SHE WON and I lost to her, she just left., by kept me thinking not knowing what is happening..I thought couple of times about it, and just smiled., about it...

Finally thougt, a girl may feel inside her, "WHEN A MALE DOG SHAKES HER TAIL, WHEN IT LOOKS HER PARTNER" the same way a girl looks "SHAKING LEG"(my guess).

I still did not understand fully , but some thing is there surely.....related to

following things can happend in sports or in genaral life also
excitement/feeling good/pleasure/deep involvement/

but above things can happen in SEX also.,

since most of the girls are looking towards "SEX INTEREST" related...better to avoid.

Better if you can avoid it, only if you can or use it safely not distubing others...

Personally I'd love to not shake my leg, but it hurts not to... But you are annoyed so I guess I should just deal?

Anonymous said...

You should tell him that it annoys you. He isn't doing it to annoy you and he probably doesn't realise that he's doing it at all.

It is very passive aggressive of you to vent on a blog about someone's unconscious habit. Perhaps you should be less self-involved and try to empathise with other people.

Anonymous said...

I know there's some scientific basis for RLS, but at the same time, I don't think it's so much a dominant genetics trait than "parents not giving a shit because they do it themselves, and so the entire family ends up doing it and no one can stop them."

I do it in private and I know it feels relaxing when I'm stressed, but I don't do it when I'm with others. I think people who say that it is a disease they can do nothing about are just looking for an excuse. They should always remember to keep their feet still on the ground. It is basically equivalent to a smoker wanting a smoke, but he knows he's not allowed one in the exam room and controls himself.

I've been shaking my leg since as far back as i can remember and it caused endless problems in school. in high school all the classrooms were portable rooms set up on jacks. When I'de be taking a test sometimes both legs would shake so hard simultaneously the whole class would feel it and get pissed. people would tell me to stop and i would but then a few minutes later I'de be back at it without realizing it. people were so sick of it once they emptied a backpack and filled it with the thickest books possible, put it on my knees, and my legs still shook. What i'm trying to say is that in some cases it is impossible to control, even if the leg shaker is conscience of it and activly trying to stop but cant.Even right now my left leg is bouncing up and down.

Anonymous said...

You chose not to ask him to stop. I shake my legs like that, too, and I haven't been diagnosed with any ADHD or ADD condition. I do know that I'm hardly ever aware that I am doing it, but because people have pointed it out to me so much in my life, I will eventually notice I'm doing it and at that point it seems natural to stop. I think if you ask someone nicely to please stop shaking their leg, they will happily oblige. Of course, they will probably continue doing it shortly after, but since you've made them aware of it, they will be more likely to realize it sooner and stop again. I can imagine it's weird for those who don't understand, but for those of us who do it, we are about as conscious of it as we are about our breathing, so please don't let it anger you so much!

There's never one right answer. Sure, it can be a medical condition if an MD gives a Dx for it, but that doesn't excuse self control when another classmate politely asks you to stop.

I absolutely agree with you. I hate people who shake their legs who annoy people. If they don't make any sound or not doing in front of or next to me that is totally fine. But the stupid jerk who sits next to me who does it every day for 8 hours non stop. I wish he would break the chair apart one day and fall down on the floor, but it just never happens!!!

Wow, allison, a hater. People like you, and there are many, waste their power and energy on someone that means nothing to them simply because the person unknowingly shakes their leg, foot, (i'm sure there are other things that bother you about other people). Your the person that leaves her house mad, goes around all day mad, and comes home mad. You spread the "hate" and discontent to every soul you cross paths with. Guess what,we who shake our legs are just as unconscious of it as we are of you, after i send this I won't waste any more of my energy thinking of you. The time you have spent hating people for the involuntary actions you could have smiled, opened a door for someone, or told someone "you look nice today" Try that everytime you hear someone shaking their leg, do something nice or smile to someone every time you notice it, might make your days better, never know 'till you try. You may even come home happy, which in turn will make your kids, partner, parents, loved ones, pets fish plants or neighbors happy, and if you have none of those people or pets in your life, well, I just hope you do.

bullshit to you idiots who are making the "subconscious" argument. you'll never do anything that you aren't even slightly consciously aware of.

people like this are those that have very little self-awareness or consideration for those around them and don't care enough to make the effort to stop.

i could compare a person like this to that of a smoker, because the social impact is relatively the same. if i'm walking behind someone and they blow cigarette smoke out their mouth and it reaches me, it sucks so hard. they have no care for anyone else in the world other than themselves and satisfying their nicotine crave. i don't care if anyone is behind me, or if they are allergic to smoke and i'm going to blow all i want.

some could make the biological argument that they need their nicotine fix and it's beyond their control. bullshit again my friends. make the conscious effort to throw away your cigarettes and don't smoke them again, simple as that.

have more consideration for the people around you, leg shakers. if you're going to shake your leg, at least have the awareness to move to a place far away from every other person around you.

unless the person has a mental illness that is impairing their judgement to an extent so that they literally have reduced motor control (in which case, i don't know why they would be sitting in a chair next to you, they'd probably be in a wheelchair), get out leg-shakers.

oh and don't tell me that ADD and ADHD are mental disorders, because like i said, everyone has control over their actions. it's how if we chose to look past our own eyes that matters.

When I was twenty-six I developed a shaking leg. Most people don't understand the complexities or the mechanics that are requisite to the symptom. Years of road trips as a child reconditioned my body to retaining urine. I became reticent and seldom voiced my bodily needs to my father. The leg shaking was a direct consequence. That and the masturbation.

I have an anxiety disorder so I shake my leg without noticing sometimes (there are also some other uncomfortable things i deal with but nvm)
its really not in your control
and it happens specially when I am focusing on school work (i.e. taking an exam)
I have ADHD and anxiety/depression and the ADHD drugs unfortunately make my anxiety worst so when I am on my ADHD drugs my leg shaking gets worst
it is rather embarrassing sometimes this guy noticed me doing it in class and made fun of my "weird leg"
I know it is very annoying my friends and family have told me but sometimes I just cant control it!
I understand why you are stressed but you need to get that some ppl just dont deal with stress as well as others and suffer from such difficulties as a result
I cant even take my exams with everyone else anymore I have to sit in an isolated room...

well I shake my legs to calm myself or when i feel restless. but most likely i find myself doing it to concentrate on something. Yet when I start then stop near the back of the knees feels uncomfortable. So in the end I just cross my legs to stop the habit....

that is one way I prevent from annoying people with this habit, though they don't really mind since they find it quite funny.

Way to unravel your entire post of apologetically consideration of it being a compulsive disorder by putting "By the way, I secretly believe that the guy mentioned in the post was not in need of medical help. He just lacked a form of self control at the expense of others."
at the end.

You're still an insensitive bitch, now you're one who assumes things of people as well.

I hope one day you have to work in close quarters with someone with OCD so you can see how debilitating it can be when trying to focus and live your life with a constant twitch that doesn't ever seem to go away.

Looks like in 4 years you sure didn't learn much in the way of compassion. maybe in the next 4 you can stop making fun of people to amuse yourself.

Uggh, that's really insensitive and I'm glad I haven't met you and I know you posted apology and all, but you're only like so many others out there who are not sensitive to others, sadly retarded to the rest of the world.

However, I'm not so brilliant like anyone else here who might know this: Can you have RLS if it NEVER hits you when you sleep? I only "bounce" my leg (to the annoyance of 1st floor apartment when my brain is actively thinking while reading the internet or a book etc). When I'm in the zone, I am most UNAWARE of my body.

Well, good luck stopping the men from bouncing legs and cute puppies from shaking their tail. I suppose you can get a knife and cut it off (cross your fingers the puppy survives) or you could tape it and make him suffer extendedly for your benefit. I'm so glad to meet such a NICE person who isn't a bitch. I love punching a stuck up tsk'er in the teeth. Maybe you'll get the come uppance you deserve soon. Thanks for outing yourself as a megathundercunt. I'll see your disapproving nasty walk coming next time you're in my classroom and make sure everyone keeps their distance from you.

I'm with you good lady.

Leg shakers are a few rungs below us on life's ladder.

And the ignorant comments from other people puts them many rungs lower than the leg shakers.

Leg shaking is not normal. You don't see other animals doing it. If you can't get through life without stimulants then you are not living life properly.

I sat about 7 feet away from a bigger guy (dunno, 250lbs?) who shook his leg constantly throughout the day.

We were on the 2nd floor, and no pillars were beneath the area where we were seated, so you could feel his movements resonating in the floor.

My monitor shook. The glass of water on my desk had Jurassic Park T-Rex moments that I recorded with my camera.

*I* have some kind of punctuative/timing disorder where I wait for a series of things to stop before starting something. Like comedic timing. So I'd get stuck in a loop waiting for the thing to stop. Like, pausing to wait for a train to go by before resuming conversation.

I have ADHD, ADD, took ritalin, compulsively will have drum beats in my head, I love typing, can't stand people who take too long to talk, and myriad other issues. But when I go to work, I put headphones on, shut the fuck up, and work.

I was always very irritated by that, along with any other obvious disruption like being interrupted verbally, or people talking too loudly in a distracting manner. Because it's at work.

Other employees would walk up to talk to him and say "Whoa, is there an earthquake?" and he'd be asked to stop by his neighbor, etc.

I'm not going to band people up and say leg-shakers are terrible, I'm just going to unwrap it and state people should be aware of what they are doing. Breathing out of your mouth loudly, not covering your nose when you sneeze, plenty of other things that cause one to encroach upon the senses of those around you.

I envied his neighbor, who could concentrate right through it.

It's not something to be argued about, it should be acknowledged, and someone should make a dampener patent and make millions from it. Fucking can't stand it, fake-disorder or not, "Are you able to work without disturbing others?" is not a required checkbox for an application, interview, etc.
